Winner of the Premier’s Regional Recognition Award

Minister for the Environment and Climate Action Lily D’Ambrosio today announced the 12 winners of the Awards – which, now in their twentieth year, are Victoria’s most highly recognised annual sustainability awards. 

The Premier’s Recognition Award was awarded to Fungi Solutions for their innovation in transforming organic waste into sustainable packaging, which can be used for compost after use, improving soil health.

Euroa Arboretum received the Premier’s Regional Recognition Award for their long-term efforts to restore native grasslands, educate the community about environmental sustainability and inspire people on the value of the native environment.

Other projects recognised included a community resale shed working to create a circular economy in a popular beachside holiday spot, and a community group that converted an abandoned quarry into a beautiful amphitheatre for public open space and community events. 

A community champion, recognising individuals and small organisations, and an industry leader, celebrating medium-large organisations, was announced in each of the six award categories. Over 40 businesses, government, education institutions and community groups were among this year’s finalists.

This year’s Premier’s Sustainability Awards were delivered collaboratively by Sustainability Victoria on behalf of the Andrews Labor Government, along with the Banksia Foundation and Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria. 

All winners will now be up for the National Banksia Foundation Awards, and the Community Leader winners for the Keep Australia Beautiful’s national awards program.

2022 Premier’s Sustainability Awards Finalist

The finalists for the 2022 Premier’s Sustainability Awards have been announced – and we are so excited to be named amongst these amazing changemakers!

We are a finalist in the Thriving Environments category for our project.

“Our community is proud of our beautiful grassland. Bush Kinder for 5 year olds from Euroa and Violet Town visit monthly and enjoy learning about the flowers and insects ofthe grassland. They help us collect seed and grow their own wildflowers. Gardening clubs, U3A groups, landcare groups and school groups visit our grassland during the main flowering season, and many assist us to harvest seed during the seeding season. Grassland sowing is a time of celebration when we encourage our young and old volunteers to help us sow our grasslands again”.

Celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2022, the awards shine a spotlight on the innovators and leaders in sustainability.

41 finalists have been selected across each of the 6 categories:

    • Thriving Environment
    • Sustainable Places and Destinations
    • Circular Economy Innovation 
    • Healthy and fair society
    • Waste and litter reduction

A Community Champion and Industry Leader will be crowned for each of the categories, as well as a Premier’s Recognition Award and Premier’s Regional Recognition Award. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in September.

The Premier’s Sustainability Awards are presented in collaboration with Sustainability Victoria on behalf of the Victorian government, Banksia Foundation and Keep Australia Beautiful (Vic).

Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA), the Department of Environment Land Water and Planning, and the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC) are sponsors of this year’s awards.

New climate ready garden in the making

Digging began March 2021

We were successful in our application for a ‘climate ready garden and meeting space’ this year.  We have engaged Louise Costa and Melissa Stagg as the designers for this area beyond the picnic area.  It is in the process of being transformed with shade sculptures and art installations.  The installed earth mounds block some of the traffic noise and create an enclosed space for gatherings and workshops.  We look forward to incorporating indigenous elements into the design through engagement with Taungurung Traditional Owners. 

A grant of $134,354 has been awarded to the Euroa Arboretum Committee of Management to establish a climate ready garden and outdoor visitor precinct. The
project will provide a shaded, restful outdoors area for events and visitor education during summer heat. Partnering with Taungurung Traditional Owners, the new space will showcase a display of drought tolerant and local native species, and demonstrate a local garden adapted for climate change.

The project improves visitor facilities and amenity, and creates new education resources for visitors, local community and Traditional Owners.

Strathbogie Forest

Support Traditional Owners as custodians of the Strathbogie Forest

Two of our good friends and loves is the Strathbogie forest, its protection and Taungurung as custodians of the forest. Please consider signing this petition in support.

The Strathbogie Forest is at a turning point. In 2019 the Victorian government recognized the significant natural values of the forest, ceased all native forest logging, created an Immediate Protection Area and committed to creating a ‘conservation reserve’ across the entire 24,000 ha IPA. Whilst nature conservation is a priority for the forest, and we must make sure it remains as such, empowering Traditional Owners to heal country and pursue self determination is no less important.

Giving Traditional Owners a leading role in public land management, policy development and operational decision-making will go a long way toward healing country and culture. This forest should become a place where indigenous cultural values and practices underpin a flourishing forest ecosystem, one that becomes and remains part of Victoria’s parks and reserves estate. 

We call on the Victorian government to recognize the Taungurung people as custodians of the Strathbogie Forest and protect their rights, interests and cultural values.
